Vernon Hills is a small but established community that offers a wealth of dining, shopping and recreational opportunities. Situated in the southern end of Lake County along U.S. Route 45, the village is less than an hour’s drive from the center of Chicago.

Residential development began in the area in the 1950s, but Vernon Hills remained without any commerce of its own until the 1970s. The establishment of a 1.2-million-square-foot complex, Hawthorn Center Mall Shopping Center, quickly brought attention to this once-sleepy village. Vernon Hills blossomed in the 1980s and 1990s, as more housing, infrastructure and recreational sites were developed in response to increased buyer demand. Over the last 35 or so years, the population has grown from 1,050 to about 22,000. Today, Vernon Hills enjoys a strong reputation for quality housing, great schools and the shopping, dining and recreational opportunities that residents want. Recreational activities include golf, biking, tennis, skateboarding and organized sports.

Public education in Vernon Hills is mainly the responsibility of Hawthorn School District, which has six campuses serving pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade. Vernon Hills High School is managed by Community High School District. Additionally, some students living in the outer areas of Vernon Hills attend schools in the neighboring communities of Long Grove or Mundelein.

Vernon Hills is a remarkably well-cared for community. The homes are generally large and attractive with pleasant landscaping. Prices for detached, single-family homes range from about $300,000 and up to $1 million. Most of these homes have at least three bedrooms, and five or more bedrooms are not uncommon. Five-bedroom homes in the Hawthorne Club and Grosse Pointe subdivisions are priced at around $500,000. Golf course homes, such as those in Greggs Landing, are valued slightly higher in the $600,000s.
