Public education in Vernon Hills is mainly the responsibility of Hawthorn School District, which has six campuses serving pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade. Vernon Hills High School is managed by Community High School District. Additionally, some students living in the outer areas of Vernon Hills attend schools in the neighboring communities of Long Grove or Mundelein.

Vernon Hills is a remarkably well-cared for community. The homes are generally large and attractive with pleasant landscaping.
